The pressure in the mass of Baikal's water rises
one atmosphere every 10 metres. A rise in pressure lowers the temperature at which water
has greatest density. So, at the surface the temperature is +3.96 degrees C. In the
deepest parts of Baikal pressure reaches a level of 164 atmospheres, the temperature of
the water with the maximum density here is close to +0.6 degrees C.
In recent years the deep belly of Baikal has been studied with the help of the
deep water apparatus, "Pisces". Depth sensors are installed in these apparatus
(improved manometers), which measure the depth of submersion of the apparatus
using the natural measurement of pressure in water.
